More Vietnamese Travel Abroad

The number of tourists visiting Indonesia, South Korea, and Japan is rapidly increasing.

According to Nhu Thi Ngan, CEO of Hanoi Tourism JSC, due to different pandemic policies implemented by countries, Vietnamese travelers have fewer options for destinations following the pandemic. Only countries that have reopened their tourism markets and removed all barriers, such as mandatory testing and quarantine, will be able to attract tourists.

Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, and Dubai tours are all appealing.

Travelers are most likely to book tours to Indonesia and South Korea because the fees are reasonable (VND 10-17 million per traveler) and the procedures are simple.

Travelers to Bali, according to Ngan, do not need to test for COVID-19 and do not require visas. Meanwhile, South Korea has a visa-free policy for Vietnamese visitors who book tours through designated travel agencies and fly into Yang Yang Airport in South Korea.

According to Vu Bich Hue of Flamingo Redtours, the outbound market grew significantly after Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan (China) began fully reopening their markets in Q4.

Many Vietnamese people choose the tours not only because of invitations and tourism promotion campaigns, but also because the countries are in the most beautiful season of the year, the red leaf season.

In terms of the Japanese market, a representative of a Hanoi-based travel company revealed that the company organizes tours to Japan every week, with 25 to 50 people on each trip. It is looking for people to travel to Japan to enjoy the spring season, with departures scheduled for the first and second days of the lunar new year.

Nga revealed at Hanoi Tourism that the company has served nearly 3,000 Vietnamese tourists traveling abroad this year.

According to a TST Tourist representative, the company’s outbound tourism has recovered by 90 percent. Southeast Asia, Europe, and America are the fastest growing markets, followed by South Korea and Japan.

He anticipates a significant increase in outbound tourists by the end of 2023 and a complete recovery by 2024.

According to Vietravel’s Q3 financial report, revenue from outbound tours will account for 50% of total revenue in September 2022, nearly matching the proportion of 66 percent seen prior to the pandemic.

According to Tran Thi Bao Thu of Fiditour-Vietluxtour, the number of outbound travelers is still not comparable to pre-pandemic years. However, when compared to the same period last year, the figure is relatively good, as tourism promotion agencies began to actively collaborate with travel firms to advertise and stimulate demand.

According to Ngan, the number of travelers has gradually recovered, but because travelers have tightened their purse strings, demand has not increased dramatically.

Meanwhile, travel companies are dealing with a number of issues, including cost increases caused by rising gasoline prices and currency fluctuations. The value of the US dollar has risen.

However, the situation is expected to improve beginning in 2023. The modest growth is still regarded as a positive sign for the tourism industry.

According to JNTO (the Japan National Tourism Organization), the number of Vietnamese visitors to Japan reached 30,900 in September, a 19.4 percent decrease from the same period in 2019, but a 2,953 percent increase from the same period in 2018.

In the first nine months of the year, as many as 191,500 Vietnamese visited Japan, placing Vietnam second only to South Korea in terms of foreign visitors.

According to the Singapore Tourism Board, Vietnam is the fifth most important tourism market in Singapore. The country received 600,000 Vietnamese visitors in 2019, and by the end of August 2022, the figure had increased to 124,000.

According to the Tourism Authority of Thailand, Vietnam is one of the five countries with the highest number of visitors to Thailand, with 324,000 visitors in the first ten months of 2022.
